Palma de Mallorca: Only a small cruise ship per day?

more than 11,000 people have signed a Petition calling for a Limit on the number of in Palma de Mallorca landing ships, reports the British the Guardian. A maximum of one ship of the day, with a maximum of 4,000 passengers, it should be in the future. Currently there are about 15,000 people of up to eight ships flocking daily to the island. Recently it had managed to Palma de Mallorca on a sad list to second place. Only Barcelona has to suffer from more pollution by cruise ships, including sewage and exhaust fumes. Marta Ferriol, coordinator of the NGO Tramuntana XXI, one of the organisations supporting the Petition, makes it clear: “As an island we have limited resources and these ships are like floating cities, discharge their waste into our waters.”

The business with the Mega-would bring ships of 5,000 jobs and the island would have been introduced to 256 million euros.

Neus Truyol, Palma’s councillor for sustainability and urban issues, is sure: “Just as we took measures to attract tourists to restrict apartments and Hotels, will also be with cruise ships procedure”. Any restrictions would, however, not occur before 2024 in force, as valid contracts were signed between the cruise lines and the port of Palma de Mallorca.
