University of Bristol has revealed its plans for the new £300 million campus it plans to build. Construction for the campus begins in 2019, and will be open by the 2021/2022 academic year.

The New Campus

University of Bristol has recently revealed its plans for building a new £300 million campus next to the Temple Meads in Bristol. The new campus will be called the “Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus,” and will be among the most important regeneration projects in the city’s recent history.

The University is also allowing local businesses and residents to share their opinions on their proposals by opening an online public consultation starting June 19th to July 21st. They also plan to reveal their proposals at an exhibition at Bristol House’s Engine Shed and the Beacon House starting June 20th till July 7th.

Another consultation will be taking place in September, and the city’s Council will be handed a planning application towards the end of the year. The construction of the new campus is set to begin in 2019, with hopes that it would be open by the 2021/2022 school year.

Hugh Brady, the president and vice-chancellor of the University said: “We have been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reimagine the future of our University as one of the world’s great civic universities while also transforming a key site at the heart of our city.”

“Our new campus is very much a work in progress and we would welcome people’s feedback, on everything from education provision, research and innovation to community engagement and transport links.”

The Plan

The campus will be about seven acres, and will be focused on digital technologies with regards to what it teaches its students and what it researches. The university also wants to make its enterprise hub bigger and also wants to build a “new student village.”

The new campus can attract more than 17,000 jobs in the span of 25 years, and will potentially add another £100 million annually to Bristol’s economy.

Other planning ideas include bicycle and pedestrian lanes that link the campus to its surrounding areas.

The Mayor of Bristol commented on the plan, saying:

“I look forward to the development of plans for the new University of Bristol Enterprise Campus planned for the heart of the Enterprise Zone. This new world class facility has the potential to turn a derelict site into an inclusive home for digital excellence, offering a vast range of opportunities and building on the city’s reputation as a leading digital city.”
