Another 03/03/20 “Black devil”: how many German aircraft shot down Crimean Tatar Amet-Khan Sultan

Amet-Khan Sultan has become one of the most successful and famous fighter pilots of the great Patriotic war. The Germans called him the Black devil, and when he saw his plane in the sky, then passed by radio to his pilots, in dannok in the square: “Achtung! Achtung! All to return to base in the sky Amet-Khan Sultan.” To distinguish the plane was not difficult – it was painted eagle. The right to have a similar distinguishing sign on the machine in the Soviet army to wasn’t easy, but Amet-Khan gave permission to the commander of the 8th air army, General Timothy Khriukin.

Unique Taran

His first aerial victory Amet-Khan scored 31 may 1942 during the defence of strategically important object – the railway bridge across the Volga near Yaroslavl. Link Soviet fighters should not allow enemy bombers to cross.

“hurricane” Amet-Khan (our pilots by this time were flying on British cars) already fired all the ammunition, but at this moment one of the enemy “Junkers” broke through a barrier and headed for the ferry. Then our pilot decided to RAM. And he succeeded, so much so that the fighter is stuck in the fuselage of the bomber. Machine stone flew down, but the Sultan at the last moment managed to jump with a parachute.

For this feat as a fighter pilot was awarded the order of Lenin, and the grateful residents of Yaroslavl presented him with a watch.

Polk aces

During the battle of Stalingrad our troops had to seize the initiative in the sky. Especially for this the already mentioned commander of the 8th air army Timofey Timofeyevich Khryukin decided to form a special aviation unit, which was dubbed “the regiment of aces”. Created it on the basis of the 9 th guards fighter aviation regiment: recruited the best of the best. Hit the link and Amet-Khan Sultan, who had already proved himself a pilot of the highest class.

However, one of the battles at Stalingrad and nearly cost him his life. The regiment received an urgent task to fly to the cover of one of the crossings, which were attacked by the Germans. Amet-Khan was a very risky step: together with his wingman, he rushed forward to distract the fighter cover until the rest of the squadron deals with the bombers. In battle, the Sultan was able to shoot down two “Messer”, but his plane was damaged and caught fire. There was only one option – to jump. Descending by parachute, as saw him headed to German fighters. The pilots of the Luftwaffe was dirty fun to shoot machine guns pilots had ejected. Suddenly system “Messerschmitt” broke and crumbled – slave threw his commander, drove the Nazis and “escorted” him to the landing. Well, that downstairs was the position of our troops, which helped him get to his part.

Gift stormtroopers

Colleagues and close comrades Amet-Khan has always celebrated his modesty, even shyness. Nevertheless, at the controls of the plane he was transformed, sometimes doing things differently as recklessness will not name. Witness to one such act was another famous Soviet pilot, twice Hero of the Soviet Union ground attack pilot Musa Gareev. Here is how he describes their meeting in his book “Stormtroopers go to target”:

“that day we were at the airport waiting for flights. Each, as usual, went about their business. Suddenly over the airfield appeared enemy aircraft. The gunners were ready to open fire, but the plane went down sharply and soon landed. All rushed to the landing site. You look, and the cabin gets Amet-Khan. Smiling, he says:
— will Receive a gift from our fighters.
— Whose plane? Where?
— Clear where. We put it on the platform. Yes, he is tired of us. Here’s to you surpassed anything we need to…
— So we could you SBITy!
— don’t have time.”

It is “not managed” shows that are actually good-natured and funny guy had incredible skills, military training and professionalism.

the End of the war, the beginning of the world

Amet-Khan Sultan throughout the war. His last sortie he made April 29, 1945 over Berlin. In that battle he shot down the fighter “Focke-Wulf 190”. All of the war he spent 603 sorties, participated in 150 clashes in the air, shot down 30 enemy fighters.

After war Amet-Khan Sultan, like all the aces were sent to study. But soon he realized that being a student at the air force Academy in Monino – not for him. He’s quitting school and dismissed to the reserve. Like many veterans, civilian life took him by surprise, and faced with its difficulties, he fell into a depression. He wasn’t attracted to civil aviation, and the military authorities did not take him, despite the numerous awards. The reason is simple – mother Amet-Khan was a Crimean Tatar, and his brother during the occupation of the Peninsula served as a policeman, collaborating with the Germans.

the Situation was saved by an accident. Once on the street he met Mr Lavrinenkov wartime comrade and the same slave who had brought him fascist “Messer” at Stalingrad. Vladimir continued to liaise with the General by Kruchinin – father “of the regiment of aces”, which, in turn, was very fond of Amet-Khan. Under the patronage of General Sultan as a former soldier managed to become a test pilot at Flight research Institute in Zhukovsky. He had a hand in the development of almost all aircraft, and many technical solutions, which he tested, are used to this day.
