History 10/03/20 “I said dead”: as Vladimir Vysotsky treat Stalin

Joseph Stalin died, when Vladimir Vysotsky was barely 15 years old. Future artist then wrote a poem dedicated to the death of the leader, called “My vow.” Vysotsky later revised his views, in relation to the “father of the peoples”.

Life in the Stalin era

friends of Vladimir Vysotsky, unlike some of the stars of the Soviet era, did not affect the repression. At least the father of the bard, being a Jew, he had quite a career: Semyon V. Vysotsky was a Colonel in the armored forces. However, in order to achieve such success, Vysotsky Sr. had to carefully hide their nationality. He even changed his middle name from Zhirinovsky to Putin. As mentioned in the book of Boris Kudryavov “the Passion according to Vladimir Vysotsky” in those years, the Jews had no right to wear epaulettes with stars. But Semyon Vladimirovich held high positions and even had a personal driver.

Vladimir Vysotsky lived for several years with his father and knew no needs. It is not surprising that in his youth he belonged to the Joseph Stalin as well as many others. When in 1953 the leader died, 15-year-old Vysotsky grieve with the whole country. He even wrote a poem about this, which was the line: “Heart pain compresses anguish” and “Swear by the grave of your do not spare the young of its forces to my great Motherland”. Igor Urazov, author of “the Forgery under Vysotsky” withdraws all the youth of Vladimir Vysotsky and generally expresses some doubt that this poem really belongs to Peru bard.

Other poems

However, according to Fedor Razzakov on the pages of his book “Vladimir Vysotsky: the secret trump card in the war,” after 3 years Vladimir Vysotsky had to revise their attitude to Joseph Stalin, however, as all the rest. In 1956, Nikita Khrushew made at the next Congress with a report “On the personality cult of Stalin.” Thanks to Khrushchev’s speech and his liberal entourage Vysotsky became an ardent anti-Stalinist. Have influenced the views of the artist and the fact that it was forced all my life to hide their origin. And the elite, part of which was Vysotsky after admission to the school-Studio of the Moscow art theatre, too, consisted mainly of Jews, victims of the Stalin era, or their relatives.

Then the poet began to write very different lyrics. So, the poem “Bath in white”, dated 1968, is already the story of the lyric hero of “the cult of personality”. There are such lines: “And on the left breast – Stalin’s profile, and on the right – Marinka EN face” and “Turned out, I wonder they’ve been marked. And I whip birch broom on the legacy of the dark times.” Vysotsky as if trying to wash away my prior beliefs. Although Michael Aronov, author of the book “Alexander Galich. Full biography,” believes that in the poem “Bath in white” Stalin is the personification of government in General.

the anti-Stalinist about the death of Stalin

with these verses, fans of Vladimir Vysotsky was sure that he had really been in Stalin’s camps. Similar rumors circulated about Vysotsky and abroad. Moreover, according to the author of the book “Vladimir Vysotsky. Life after death” Viktor Bakin, in the article “The New York Times” on the death of Vladimir Semenovich, stated: “He (Vysotsky) served time in the camps and was released after Stalin’s death in 1953”. Similar legends for some explained the anti-Soviet and anti-Stalinist position, followed by the artist.

as evidence of this view of Vladimir Semenovich, you can give a story that is described in the book of Mark Cybulski, “the Life and travels of Vladimir Vysotsky”. As claimed by Cybulski, Polish actor Daniel Olbrychski, who was a friend of Vysotsky, told about how one day they and a few foreigners drove past the summer residence of Joseph Stalin. Bard, pointing to the house said: “Here died, Stalin!”. Olbrychski translated the rest: “Here Stalin died”. But Vysotsky suddenly angry “Translate as it should! I said, drop dead!” – he roared.
