The most scandalous actions of Boris Yeltsin

History 11/03/20 LiveInternetСамые scandalous actions of Boris Yeltsin

the first Russian President Boris Yeltsin can be treated differently – to respect, to admire, to despise, to hate – but one can hardly dispute that Boris was a person, capable of decisive and extraordinary actions, which ultimately changed the history of Russia.

the Signing of the Belavezha accords

all-Union referendum of 1991, the majority of people voted for preserving the USSR as a unified state. However, after the August coup, almost all the Soviet republics declared independence.

on 8 December 1991, the RSFSR President Yeltsin, together with the heads of the republics of Belarus and Ukraine signed the Treaty on creating the Commonwealth of independent States (CIS). 12 December 1991, it was ratified by the Supreme Council. The introductory part stated: “the USSR as a subject of international law and a geopolitical reality ceases to exist”.

Market-oriented reforms

the end of 1991, the country had a severe economic situation. Russia had a large external debt, lacked food and other goods. The way out of the situation, Yeltsin saw the creation of a market economy and the so-called shock therapy. Since January 1992 was declared the “liberalization” of prices. This allowed in the first months to flood the market with consumer goods, but led to hyperinflation.

Privatization

After socialism collapsed, had something to do with state property. In the summer of 1992 with the filing of the Yeltsin began to issue vouchers that could be exchanged for shares of various companies. But few in the former Soviet Union was thinking in investing. Some, however, the population bought vouchers for a similar price, and then literally for a song, took possession of the former socialist sobpublic. So in Russia there is a class of oligarchs.

the dissolution of the Supreme Council

in the Fall of 1993, the President had a conflict with the Parliament on a number of economic and political issues, as a result he issued the decree about dissolution of Congress of people’s deputies and the Supreme Soviet unconstitutional. In Moscow started the riots. October 4 the President gave the order to disperse the Parliament by military force. On the streets of the capital were tanks, the shooting started. Television was broadcast to the whole world the footage of the burning of the White house.

Conducting an orchestra

August 31, 1994, Boris Yeltsin was in Berlin in Treptow Park, where, together with German Chancellor Helmut Kohl attended a ceremony of withdrawal of the Western group of forces from Germany. Having uttered a formal speech, the Russian President is swaying, headed towards who was in the square the orchestra of the police of Berlin, snatched the conductor’s wand and started waving it, trying to conduct the orchestra. Then he seized the microphone and humming “Kalinka”.

Some publications later called this act “a disgrace to all Russians”, because the President obviously was in a state of alcoholic intoxication! However, the tendency of Yeltsin to alcohol abuse was not news either for his inner circle, nor their Western partners, nor for the Russian people.

the war in Chechnya

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in some regions, increased separatist sentiment. June 8-9, 1991 on the territory of the former Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet socialist Republic emerged the self-proclaimed Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, which on 6 September of the same year declared its independence. In the Republic there were riots.

December 11, 1994 by the decree of President Yeltsin on Chechnya was imposed by the Federal troops. This was the beginning of the First Chechen war. The Chechen conflict continued for many years and was resolved only when PutinE.

the Unexpected resignation

December 31, 1999, at 12 noon, Yeltsin went on television and declared that leaves the post of President.

“Today I last time address to you as President of Russia, – he said in his speech. – I made a decision. Slowly and painfully pondered over it. Today, the last day of the outgoing century, I resign”.

the Acting President was appointed by Vladimir Putin, shortly before it became the Prime Minister. It seems that Yeltsin has prepared the ground for the withdrawal, choosing a decent, in his opinion, the successor. The Yeltsin era has ended.

Today, decided to blame the bn. Yeltsin in the collapse of the country. Likely, many of his political actions and decisions were misguided and ill-conceived, however, was the desire to create a strong free state, towards which we are now.
