Clint Eastwood, best known as an actor, is not only involved in this main activity but also as a producer and director of films, but also as a musician and politician. He became famous in the 1960s for his role in Sergio Leone’s Dollar Trilogy and his role as Dirty Harry in the 1970s and 1980s. In total, he was involved in the creation of over 50 films, whether in front of or behind the camera.

Early life

Clint Eastwood, born in San Francisco in May 1930, is a direct descendant of a Mayflower passenger. Since his father had changing jobs on the west coast during his early childhood, the family often moved. From 1940 to 1949, however, they lived exclusively in Piedmont in California. There they lived a fairly decent life, were a member of a country club and even then the family owned two cars. It is unclear whether Clint Eastwood even finished high school. In any case, he started making money as a golf caddy, a firefighter or a swimming instructor. Instead of being accepted at the University of Seattle, he was drafted into the Army in 1951 since the Korean War began. However, he was never used there, but spent his entire time in the military as a swimming instructor in the USA.

From the early 1950s, he sought roles in films in the nearby film business. First, after numerous rejections during the audition, he received a few minor roles that were not even mentioned in the credits. His lack of acting talent was criticized again and again, even though he brought an impressive stature to the sets with a height of 1.93m. When he still hadn’t gotten over small roles for a long time, he finally got a leading role in 1959. This was done in the Western series Rawhide, which earned him a certain fame. Clint Eastwood embodied this role in 217 episodes until 1965. However, his career really only got going with the role of the “nameless guy” in the film “For a Fistful of Dollars” by Sergio Leone.

Though only priced for this role, the success of this film, which was not expected by critics, meant the definitive start of his career as a film actor by Clint Eastwood. The film “For a Fistful of Dollars” started a great hype around the so-called Italo-Westerns, for which Clint Eastwood became an icon of pop culture. With his cool, silent manner, but also the refinement of his characters, he became the model for several imitators in hundreds of Italo-Westerns that were to follow in the next few years.

With Clint Eastwood, director Sergio Leone followed “For a few dollars more” and in 1966 “Two glorious scoundrels”. The latter is considered the best western film in history by various specialist magazines and is also one of the top 20 films by many critics.

Nevertheless, it still took some time for Hollywood Clint Eastwood to assume larger roles. In the late 1960s, however, he made several films there that played in World War II, which further promoted his image as an action hero. In 1971, the breakthrough to Hollywood was made. The “Dirty Harry” series featured Clint Eastwood as a policeman chasing a serial killer using questionable methods. Eastwood had already founded its own production company in 1967. Finally, in the early 1990s, after celebrating countless other successes as an actor at the box office, he also began his very successful career as a director.

Career highlights
