Short introduction

The Scottish-Australian musician Angus Young is a founding member and longtime lead guitarist of the hard rock band AC / DC. In addition to his skill on the guitar, his wild appearances on stage made him famous, where he always wears a school uniform.

Early life

Born the youngest of eight children in a working-class family in Glasgow, Scotland, he made contact with music in general and rock’n’roll in particular at a very early age. His sister played Little Richard and Elvis records for him and took him to a Louis Armstrong concert when Angus Young was only six years old.

His family also emigrated to Sydney in Australia early. There he learned to play some riffs using his brother Malcolm’s old guitar. He soon got his own electric guitar, a Gibson SG. Back then, he went to the garage to play guitar right after school. He kept his school uniform on, which later gave him his trademark.

He left school at the age of 15 and worked to be able to buy his own complete electric guitar set. Even then he performed in bands, even then he excited his audience by showing a duckwalk while playing the guitar. This should also remain another Angus Young trademark later.

Career

In 1973, his brother Malcolm eventually founded AC / DC, accepting his little brother Angus Young as the lead guitarist. The first single was not a success, but the foundation for a world career was laid with the formation of this band. In 1974 the singer Bon Scott was brought in, with whom one celebrated worldwide successes from 1975, which continued until Bon Scott’s death in 1980.

During this time the muscular Bon Scott often took the slender Angus Young on his shoulders at concerts, from where Angus Young continued to play his impressive solos.

Bon Scott died in 1980. The band found a worthy successor in Brian Johnson, which was also well received by the audience. After the two albums Back in Black from 1980 and For Those About to Rock from 1981, the band fell into a creative crisis. This was successfully completed in the mid-1980s.

Since the 1990s, the very productive band released only four new studio albums in the 1970s. Worldwide, however, their concerts and tours remained an absolute crowd puller. In 2014, founder Malcolm Young had to leave the band because of the consequences of a stroke, and he died in 2017. Nevertheless, AC / DC continues to exist, even if singer Brian Johnson also had to leave the band because he threatened to become deaf at further concerts. For a short time, the Guns’n’Roses ex-singer Axl Rose was hired to replace him. With these changes in the lineup of the band, Angus Young remains the only remaining founding member of the band, who was also continuously part of the band.

Although Angus Young has a huge collection of guitars, his Gibson SG remains the model he likes to play most. In his honor, guitar manufacturer Gibson sells three different models from a Gibson SG Signature range.

So far, AC / DC has sold around 150 million records, which, see above, has made Angus Young a rich man. However, his artistic influence, which many later guitarists still state today, seems to be more important to him. In addition to his virtuosity on the guitar, on which he set standards in both blues and rock, many of his fans were also impressed by his always stunningly dynamic show on stage. The school uniform is still part of Angus Young’s performances, as is his duckwalk, which he had improvised due to a fall on stage. It is unknown whether AC / DC will ever release records again. What is certain, however, is that the band has not yet been officially dissolved.

Famous quotes

“My wife says she instantly recognizes a Rolling Stones riff by the classic three chords. Very nice, I say, but far too complex. ”

“I’m really annoyed that people say we released 11 albums that all sound the same. In reality we released 12 albums that all sound the same. ”

“A good record is one in which you bob your feet. I always say let your feet do the thinking. ”

“I have the blues in my heart and the devil in my fingers.”

Amazing facts

Angus Young lives in Sydney, Australia, as well as in the Netherlands near the German border. His wife is Dutch.

The music magazine “Rolling Stone” ranks Angus Young 24th in its list of the best guitarists of all time.

In his school bag, which he also carried with him on the stage with AC / DC at the beginning, was the then rather large radio transmitter for his electric guitar.
