Bernhard Langer is the most successful professional golfer in Germany. He achieved his greatest successes in 1985 and 1993 when he won the US Masters twice. The 62-year-old is still on the senior tour today, where he won the money list in nine out of ten years. By mid-2019, he had won 112 international golf tournaments. Bernhard Langer has been married since 1984 and has four children. Today he lives with his family in Florida.
Bernhard Langer was born in Anhausen, Bavaria, to a bricklayer. His mother was a housewife. Langer came to play golf because he made some money as a caddy on the nearby golf course in his hometown. That was equivalent to 0.50 cents an hour at the time. At that time, golf was more of a sport for the rich. A player gave Bavaria, who grew up in rather modest circumstances, a few golf clubs. His parents were not impressed when their son started an apprenticeship as a golf coach at the age of 15. In 1976 Langer finally became a golf instructor near Augsburg. Langer started his extremely successful golf career at the age of 17. At that time he won his first professional tournament in Refrath. After that it only went up. In 1980, at the age of only 23, he won one of his first major European tournaments. Five years later, the green jacket at the US golf club in Augusta in the state of Georgia could only slip on for the first time: he won the US Masters, which alongside the US Open, the Open Championship in England and the PGA Championship in the USA were among the four most important golf tournaments belongs to the world. The second victory in Augusta followed in 1993. Equipped with lifelong right to play at the US Masters, he made 8th place in Augusta at the age of 56. Bernhard Langer is still one of the most successful professional golfers of all time in the senior series.
The highlights of his professional golfing career can hardly be listed. In addition to the double major victory in Augusta, Bernhard Langer has won a major on the senior series 11 times. The last time in 2019 was the Senior British Open in England – at the age of 62. He has been PGA Tour Champions or Champions Tour Player of the Year eight times. Langer was the first player to win the Senior Players Championship three times in a row. And according to his own statement, he is not yet thinking of stopping. He told the sports information service at the beginning of October 2019: “I will definitely play tournament golf for the next few years.” He still enjoys playing golf and think he can always improve.
In 2002 he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Queen Elizabeth II of England named him “Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire” in 2006. In Germany, Bernhard Langer is the recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit and the Silver Laurel Leaf. The Deutsche Sporthilfe Foundation awarded him for his life’s work with the “Golden Sports Pyramid”, for his “sporting and entrepreneurial achievements and his social commitment”. The “Bernhard Langer Foundation” he founded in 2003 supports people in need. The “Langer Sport Marketing GmbH” he founded plans, organizes and conducts golf events. Since 1996 he has been designing and developing new golf courses worldwide with a team of architects, including in France, Mauritius, Japan and China.
