Short introduction

For many, Michael Jackson is still considered the “King of Pop” and also the most successful entertainer of all time. He was a singer, dancer, songwriter and music and film producer from the United States. He celebrated his greatest successes in the 80s and 90s.

Early life

Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, the eighth of ten children of his parents Joseph and Katherine Jackson in Gary, Indiana. The boy’s musical talent became apparent early on. His father drove him and his siblings to peak performance at an early age and tried to raise their profile through numerous appearances at talent shows. He also founded the band “The Jackson Five” in 1966, which, alongside Michael Jackson as the main singer, consisted of his brothers Marlon, Tito, Jermaine and Jackie Jackson. Together with his brothers, he already had worldwide success with “The Jackson Five”. Michael Jackson started his solo career at the age of 13, but remained a member of the group.

Career

In autumn 1971 his first solo single “Got to Be There” was released, with which he was able to climb to number 4 on the American charts. Further individual similarly successful singles in the classic R&B style followed. Finally, Michael Jackson released his first solo album “Got to Be There” in 1972, with which he landed at number 3 on the US charts. This was followed by number 1 placements in the charts and further solo albums, which despite other successes could not build on “Got to be There”.

His real breakthrough as a solo artist came in 1979 with the album “Off the Wall”, which has sold more than 20 million copies to date. In addition to the two number 1 hits “Don´t Stop til You Get Enough” and “Rock with You”, two other songs on the album were in the top 10 of the charts. For the first time, the album featured songs by Michael Jackson in disco style.

In 1982 Michael Jackson finally made his breakthrough as a world star with his solo album “Thriller”. It has sold over 100 million copies to date, making it the most successful album ever. The performance of the song “Billie Jean”, which also appeared on the album and in which he popularized the “Moonwalk”, was to give him legendary status.

Finally followed five years later the album “Bad”, with which Michael Jackson went on solo tour for the first time. The “Bad Tour” was seen by around 4.4 million viewers. His second tour for the album of the same name “Dangerous” was also well attended, but had to be stopped early because the megastar was becoming increasingly physically and mentally unstable.

In 1995 Michael Jackson came back with the “History World Tour” and was actually able to exceed the number of spectators on the “Bad Tour”. Nevertheless, there were hardly any positive comments from his critics about this tour.

Despite the allegation of child abuse, which Michael Jackson acquitted of all charges in 2005, his musical success around the turn of the millennium was still outstanding. His last album “Invincible”, which is still the most expensive album in the world, reached number 1 on the charts in 25 countries.

For 2009 Michael Jackson planned his farewell tour “This Is It”, for which a concert film of the same name was made. This is the most successful concert film ever. However, Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009 of an overdose of an anesthetic. 18 days before his farewell tour should start.

Career highlights

Over 80 awards, the world’s most successful album “Thriller” and numerous other outstanding records clearly speak for the extraordinary career of the “King of Pop”, Michael Jackson. He is the most successful artist of all time after sales of recordings within a year and his music, his extraordinary stage shows and especially his dance style continue to influence numerous people in the world even after his death.
