Rolf Eden was born in Berlin in February 1930. His real name was Rolf Sigmund Sostheim, he has a brother. The Jewish family had to emigrate as early as 1933. They found a home in what was then Palestine. His father first drove a taxi, later his parents ran a café and his grandparents ran a hotel in Haifa. At 14, Eden made his living as a musician after leaving school. He fought under Jitzhak Rabin in the first Arab war. All of his comrades were shot. Eden survived thanks to a faint, which saved his life. Eden moved to Paris, where he worked as a musician. 1956 read in the newspaper that all Berliners who had fled abroad can return. And not only that, everyone who returned received an entry fee of 6000 German marks. Eden had to wait for the welcome money for some time. He bridged this time with various activities, so he worked as a vacuum cleaner representative, as a bartender and night porter in a US barracks. When he received the money, he opened the Eden Salon in 1957 on Nestorstrasse, at the corner of Kurfürstendamm. Just a few years later, he opened the New Eden in Damaschkestrasse. From then on, the Eden Salon was called “Old Eden”. More clubs followed. He then opened the Eden Playboy Club and the keyhole cabaret. In 1967, Eden opened the Big Eden. In the early 50s and 60s, Eden shaped the nightclub scene significantly and as the king of it. Eden’s life was also crowned with success in the 1970s and 1980s. He gradually sold his establishments after the political change. Last came the Big Eden, which he sold in 2002. In 1977 he started to invest in real estate. In 2012, he had 26 apartment buildings in Berlin, several hundred apartments. Eden has seven children with seven women today and is Germany’s largest, best-known playboy. Despite his turbulent life, he never attracted attention with scandals. In addition to his career as a playboy, he has also starred in various films.
Rolf Eden had the greatest success with the opening of the Big Eden in 1967. For many years, the Big Eden was one of the most legendary discotheques in Berlin. In 2002 Eden sold the Big Eden and in 2006 it was closed permanently. During the heyday, numerous prominent guests such as Harald Juhnke, Telly Savallas, Lollo Ferrari, Audrey Landers, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Sascha Hehn, as well as well-known directors and producers were among the welcome visitors to the Big Eden.
One of the best known quotes from Rolf Eden is: “I repress everything I don’t like”. One has to repress the bad in life, is part of his maxim. He has come a long way in saying only what others want to hear. Taking people more important than they are is a winning formula. He was obviously really liked. He left school at the age of 14 and earned his money in various jobs, from vacuum cleaner representatives to bartenders, night porters, film extras and musicians. When asked about the fact that he hadn’t learned anything, he replied: “Fortunately, yes, it saved me a decent job like a doctor or pastor.” The statement “there are hundreds of politicians and professors, well-known Playboy there is only one” is typical for Rolf Eden.
