Earlier life

Serena Jameka Williams was born in Michigan. A few years later, she moved to Compton, Los Angeles with her parents and siblings. Her father, who ran a security company, taught tennis to his two daughters Serena and Venus early on. In 1991 the Williams moved to Palm Beach Gardens in Florida. Here Serena and Venus trained under coaches like Rick Macci and Nick Bolletieri. Then father Richard took over the coaching of the two sisters.

Serena celebrated her first amateur success at the age of 10. She started her professional career at the age of 14. At the age of 16, she won against the world-leading Monica Seles and, after she left the semi-finals, managed to get into the top ten players in the ranking. On September 11, 1999 Serena Williams won the US Open for the first time in her young career at the age of 17. Today there are 23 Grand Slam trophies, 49 tournament victories on the WTA tour on Serena Williams’ success list. The exceptional athlete also won 4 gold medals at the Olympic Games. In February 1999 she had her first tournament success in the French capital. In the same year she reached the final of the US Open and won the world ranked Martina Hingis. The Grand Slam title was her first single title to date. In 2001, Sister Venus defeated Serena in the US Open final. 2002 was the most successful season for the American. For the second time in her career, she won the Grand Slam tournament. Thanks to her outstanding performance, she secured first place in the world rankings from July 2002. The 2004 season was less successful, losing to Sharapova at Wimbledon. In 2005 she won the seventh Grand Slam title in her career. In 2006 the tennis legend fell into a depression because she was already in the third round against Daniela Hantuchova. After this season, she finished 95th in the world rankings. In 2008 she made it to the Wimbledon final, which she clearly lost to her sister. At the Olympic Games, the Williams sisters won gold in doubles.

Number one is my ultimate goal. I’m going to get to the top this year, I’m a wildcat, quick-tempered, sometimes unbridled – and: unstoppable.

Any dream can come true if you don’t lose sight of it and work hard on it. I had to fight all my life – had to learn to keep smiling. As long as you don’t forget to smile, everything will be fine in the end. Any dream can come true if you don’t lose sight of it and work hard on it.

If anything, losing only makes me more motivated.

Happiness has nothing to do with it. I have spent countless hours on the field and worked towards my breakthrough without knowing when it was coming.
