Short introduction

Tina Turner is a singer who was also active as an actress. She has sold over 180 million records in her career, making her one of the most commercially successful singers worldwide. She started her career as part of the duo “Ike & Tina Turner” with her husband at the time. From the late 1970s she started her impressive career as a solo artist.

Early life

When Anna Mae Bullock was born in Tennessee in 1939, she began singing early in the community church choir. Her parents separated soon after their birth, so that she grew up temporarily with her grandmother. In 1955, however, she moved to her mother in St. Louis. In 1958 she had a son, a umstan, who did not prevent her from joining Ike Turner as a background singer. He later became her husband. In 1960 they had their first minor hit in the US charts. From then on the real career of the woman who had been given the stage name Tina Turner by Ike Turner began.

Career

The band from Ike Turner now performing as “Ike & Tina Turner” did some successful tours. Not only in the USA, but also in Europe. In addition to her artistic success, she also brought a great income to the two married from 1962.

For a while they even went on tour as the opening act for the Rolling Stones. The hit single “River Deep, Mountain High” became a success in Europe and made it extremely popular. With the song “Nutbush City Limits”, an allusion to their place of birth, the two landed a charter success in Germany. The single came to number 2 on the charts. Tina Turner had composed this song herself.

Tina Turner gave up all rights to the earlier jointly recorded songs, but retained the right to continue to operate under the stage name under which she had become known. Nevertheless, the beginning of her career as a solo artist initially stuttered. Her excursions into the genre of disco music that was popular at the time were not very well received by the audience. The whole thing was topped off by their 1986 album “Break Every Rule”, on which there were three real success songs that came out as a single. The result was huge crowds at their concerts. So she played a stadium concert in front of 180,000 spectators in Rio de Janeiro.

In the 1990s she sang the title song “Golden Eye” for a James Bond film, published an autobiography. Her last album was finally released in 1999, after which she more or less retired. Then, however, she did some major tours in the 2000s. With the last concert in May 2009 she ended her stage career.

Before that, she had already permanently moved to Switzerland. From there she published a few albums with spiritual and Christian chants. A musical premiered in 2018 that included her life’s journey – with the approval of Tina Turner.
