Short introduction

Wiz Khalifa is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and actor who made his international breakthrough with the song “Black and Yellow”.

Early life

Khalifa was born Cameron Jibril Thomaz in 1987 in London in Minot, North Dakota. Through his father’s military service, Khalifa lived in Germany, Great Britain and Japan before settling in Pittsburgh with his mother in 1996. Shortly after moving to Pittsburgh, Khalifa began to write and present his own texts. His stage name is derived from Khalifa, an Arabic word that means “follower” and wisdom and was shortened to Wiz when Khalifa was a little boy. At 15, he regularly recorded his music in a studio called ID Labs. The management of the studio was so impressed by his lyrics that Khalifa was allowed to record for free. This allowed him to get professional studio times for free and to attract more attention at such a young age than other artists. He already had a local group of fans in Pittsburgh at the time.

Career

In 2006 he received national attention with his mixtape “Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania”. The following year, Khalifa had his first hit rap single with “Say Yeah”. Around this time he also released other mixtapes, including “Grow Season” in 2007 and “How Fly” in 2009. In 2011 he achieved his first big success with “Black and Yellow”, an ode to the Pittsburgh Steelers. “Black and Yellow” was on his album “Rolling Papers”, which rose to number two on the album charts. In 2012 Wiz Khalifa teamed up with Snoop Dogg for the comic film “Mac and Devin Go to High School”. His next album “ONIFC” from 2012 included singles like “Word Hard, Play Hard” and “Remember You”. Khalifa worked with a number of other rappers on the record, including Juicy J and Pharrell Williams. He also went on a concert tour called “The Under The Influence of Music Tour”. As a guest artist, Khalifa had another hit with Maroon 5 with the song “Payphone”. In 2013 he released his collaboration with Curren $ y, which included seven new songs. In 2014 Wiz Khalifa released “Blacc Hollywood”. The album featured tracks like “We Dem Boyz”. Guest artists included Rick Ross and Nas. Khalifa, together with Charlie Puth, topped the charts again in 2015 with the song “See You Again”. The ballad, a tribute to the late actor Paul Walker, appeared on Furious 7 soundtrack and was nominated for several Grammy Awards. In 2018 he released the singles “Hopeless Romantic” and “Real Rich” with Gucci Mane with Swae Lee. In 2019 Khalifa returned with the collaboration with the artists Trippie Red and Preme with the song “Alright”.

Khalifa has won the Billboard Music Awards and Teen Choice Awards several times. He was also nominated for the Grammy Awards, Golden Globe Award and People’s Choice Awards. The Pittsburgh City Council declared December 12, 2012 Wiz Khalifa Day in the city.
