Short introduction

Farin Urlaub was born as Jan Vetter on October 27, 1963 in West Berlin. He is active in many areas, for example Farin also deals with photography and also appears as a solo artist. However, he is known to a wide audience as a founding member of the band “Die Ärzte”. His trademark is his bright blonde hairstyle with which he stands out as the frontman of the band.

He also counts as the creative head of the band, co-wrote many texts and also wrote many well-known songs for the doctors.

Early life

Although he always keeps his private life out of the public eye as much as possible, some things became known from his early days.

It is known that he lived with his mother in the Moabit district of Berlin until he was seven years old. He then spent his youth up to the age of 18 in Frohnau, during which time his mother liked to play songs by the Beatles and so he came into contact with music for the first time.

He took guitar lessons from an older woman at the age of nine, during which time he adopted the most important standards for guitar playing. He regularly played guitar on school trips and holiday camps to share with friends and teachers. The associated criticism was anything but positive, however, because his later music teacher also advised him not to do anything with music. But maybe it was precisely this criticism that Farin needed at the time. First he attended secondary school and high school, which he graduated from high school. At the age of 16, he had his hair cut and bleached blond for the first time on a school trip to London. He joined the punk scene and broke off a degree in archeology due to his budding music career.

Soon after 1981, Farin met the musician Dirk Felsenheimer (also known as Bela B). The two played together in his band since Dirk was looking for a guitarist.

Career

A short time later in 1982, the band around Dirk and Farin disbanded and the result was the new band called “Die Ärzte”. A steep rise followed, several albums followed in the following years, the band enjoyed commercial success and played many live performances.

However, in 1988 promptly at the peak of success, Farin Urlaub suggested the band separate. This certainly shocked the fans of the band, because the separation was actually implemented. After that there was a little longer break until the band finally got together again in 1993. Farin also started a solo career in 2001 and released a total of four albums plus one live album between 2001-2014.

Career highlights

There were many highlights in Farin Urlaub’s 30-year career, and he was sometimes showered with prizes and awards with the doctors. They received pretty much all the awards that exist in the music business, including several times the Echo, the World Music Award, the Comet, as well as the Bravo Otto and the MTV Europe Music Award for best German act.

Farin was also very successful with his solo career and his albums sold well. In Germany he was in the top 3 of the charts with each of his albums, and he also entered the charts in Austria and Switzerland.

He also starred in several B-Movies, already in 1985 in the film “Richy Guitar” by Michael Laux and in 2015 in the film Lust and Sound in West Berlin.

He also published some illustrated books as a photographer, because one of his great passions is traveling. The proceeds from the first illustrated book were donated to the organization “Doctors Without Borders”.

Amazing facts

Farin Urlaub is a self-confessed non-smoker and non-alcoholic, and in 1987 he decided to lead a life as a pescetarian. This means a diet that does not eat meat, but not fish meat.

He says about his own guitar skills that he has mastered the rhythm guitar quite well now, but that also took 30 years.

Through his travels he also became very linguistic and over the years he learned different languages, including English, Latin and Portuguese.
